Israel Adesanya Arrested and Detained For Possessing Brass Knuckles at the JFK Airport
Israel Adesanya was arrested Wednesday at JFK Airport in New York while going through security screenings, just four days after losing his UFC middleweight championship to Alex Pereira, a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and former kickboxer.
On Wednesday afternoon, just before 2:00 p.m., Adesanya was apprehended near JFK’s American Airlines terminal. local time, according to TMZ.
He was accused of having brass knuckles, which are illegal in New York and a misdemeanor offense.
If convicted, he may spend up to one year in jail plus potential fines.
He has been detained in police custody and may be barred from leaving New York until officials complete their investigation.
It’s uncertain if Adesanya’s brass knuckles were a part of his carry-on bag, on his person, or in a checked bag. The purpose of the possession is also uncertain at this time.
According to TMZ, a fan offered a wrapped gift to the former champ that Adesanya didn’t think about opening. He simply put it in his luggage and decided to travel with it. To his surprise, that gift was a set of brass knuckles that the police obviously found. Since they realized Adesanya wasn’t aware he carried these with him, they reportedly let him leave without an issue. It is still unclear how much time Adesanya was kept in custody while the matter was settled but he was there for an important period of time.
