Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United footballer, will be released from jail later today after being granted bail.

The England striker, 21, will be allowed to return home after spending two nights in jail after his legal team requested bail. He is currently detained at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, North Wales, and will be released later.

After a brief hearing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, Judge John Potter granted Greenwood bail.

The Manchester United player has been charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault on a teen.

Greenwood did not attend the brief hearing in court this morning, which was held in private, with the press forced to observe from outside Court 4.

His bail conditions mean he has to reside at his rented home in Bowdon, Gtr Manchester, and is not allowed to contact the complainant or witnesses.

The forward only appeared in the dock at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey jogging bottoms.

He had been denied bail until a crown court appearance on November 21 but he was granted bail today after his legal team made the bail application.

The footballer was charged with attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021.

He is also accused of engaging in controlling or coercive behavior, namely ‘monitoring her social media accounts and making threats and derogatory comments towards her, amounting to a serious effect upon her’.

He is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on December 21.

The player was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

He had been on bail since then but was arrested in the Trafford area on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions by contacting the alleged victim.

Shortly after 4 pm on Saturday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Greenwood.

Janet Potter, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, said: ‘The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

‘All three counts relate to the same complainant.

‘Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorized the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.’

The controlling and coercive behavior relates to a period between November 2018 and October this year, while the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.
